Carol Breedlove

Hi!

I’m an international school teacher and outdoor learning enthusiast currently working in Germany.

My Goal

By sharing my experiences as an outdoor learning teacher for preschool and elementary school students, I hope to encourage educators to take their teaching outdoors. The Covid-19 pandemic has made learning outdoors more important than ever. If all goes as planned, educators will find reasons, inspiration and information here to make Nature their co-teacher. If you are a parent, I hope you can be convinced to take your children – of all ages – outside to play, learn and explore! My dream is for children everywhere to enjoy experiential learning outside while developing meaningful relationships with the natural world.

A Bit More About Me

When I was a Brownie Girl Scout, my favorite achievements were earning the Cabin Camper and Outdoor Adventurer badges.

Before receiving a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Valdosta State University, I was employed by the Girl Scout Council of the Apalachee Bend in Tallahassee, Florida. There I developed and delivered a diverse range of outdoor programs including camping, backpacking, canoeing and white-water rafting excursions for girls aged 7 to 21. I am a certified Elementary School teacher who has taught in Mississippi, Florida and Georgia in the United States.

I began teaching in Germany in 2000. In 2013, I joined the Outdoor Learning team at my school and began co-teaching the Reception children (aged 3, 4 & 5 years old) with Claire Dermanowicz. Claire and I  facilitated play-based and child-initiated learning experiences in the outdoor learning environment every day of the school year in every kind of weather. In 2021, I taught outdoor learning to 4th and 5th grade students. Outdoor learning for the older elementary students is a combination of environmental education, curriculum-based outdoor learning, horticulture, field studies and bush craft.

Are You Ready?

So now, let’s dress for the weather and have some fun learning outdoors!
