Play a Memory Game Outside

Welcome to Day 10 of September to Remember. We’ve been taking our students outside to learn every school day this month!

It’s Friday! YAY! (Every teacher has a special place in their hearts for Friday.)

Here’s a quick idea for some fun Friday learning: Take your students out to play a memory game.

You can use any items you like for your memory game.

I chose to use our outdoor learning resources.

I have been teaching my students to put away resources independently. When a child is finished using a magnifying lens, he or she should hang it back up immediately.

For my memory game, I took some of our learning resources from the hanging resource bag and put them on the black mat.

How many binoculars do we have? What colors are they?

First, we counted how many phones we had. We named the colors of the phones. We did the same with the magnifying lens, binoculars and little bags. We counted the goggles.

Next I had the children cover their eyes.

I removed one resource from the black mat.

The children had to tell me which resource was missing. They thought the game was great fun. We played several rounds. The children took turns being the person to remove a resource.

To encourage responsibility, I reminded the children to put away the resources when they were finished with them. At the end of play time, we examined the hanging bag. The children were better able to identify and name any missing resources. We found all of our resources before we went indoors for snack.

Have a little fun fostering responsibility and increasing your students’ thinking skills outside today. Take your students out to play your favorite memory game.
