You asked… so here it is! In this post I will share our outdoor learning scope & sequence documents.

If you’ve read several of my blog posts, you know I struggle with brevity. I’ll do my best to keep this one short.

There’s just a few comments about our scope & sequence that I’d like to share with you.

  1. The outdoor learning teachers met with Kate Hookum, Senior Educational Consultant at Mindstretchers to create our outdoor learning scope & sequence document.
  2. The process of creating and writing the scope & sequence document was an amazing professional development opportunity. It was a challenging task. The sense of accomplishment at the end of it was great. I learned a lot from Kate.
  3. The format of our scope & sequence is modeled after the IBO Primary Years Programme as that is the curricular framework used at our school.
  4. It’s a living document. Every couple of years the outdoor learning teachers meet to review the scope & sequence for content, relevancy and layout. We make changes as needed.

And one last point: We had been doing outdoor learning at our school for several years before we decided to write a scope & sequence. The scope & sequence did not come first. We turned our experience and knowledge into a curriculum that spirals upwards in knowledge, skills and participation from our youngest learners (Reception class age 3-5 years old) to our 5th graders.

So without further ado….
